In this article published in the July/August 2016 issue of Change magazine, JFF’s Nancy Hoffman examines how higher education institutions can more intentionally prepare young people for the world of work and build their social capital. As an example, Guttman Community College, the City of New York’s (CUNY) first new community college in 40 years, puts career development and learning at the center of its curriculum. Through class observations and interviews, the article explores one course in particular, Ethnographies of Work (EOW), which provides students with tools to understand and address challenges and opportunities they face in the labor market.
