Advancing AI-Resilient Early-Career Pathways

Meet the innovators pioneering new models of work-based learning, durable skill assessment, and employer engagement

JFF is partnering with innovators to explore how early-career workers can build skills, demonstrate readiness, and access quality jobs in an AI-transformed labor market. 

Overview and Goals

Artificial intelligence (AI) is fundamentally changing how people enter the workforce and advance in their careers. While AI can create more productive and meaningful work, it also risks widening economic divides by displacing jobs and closing off entry points to stable careers, particularly for early-career workers who disproportionately hold entry-level, routine-task roles most vulnerable to automation. 

We are in a critical window for intervention to ensure early-career workers have the skills, experience, and networks that shape career trajectories across a lifetime. With AI’s long-term impacts still taking shape and clear data signals only just beginning to emerge, we need to identify and test “no-regrets” strategies that will help build resilient early-career pathways and models as AI transformation evolves.  

Jobs for the Future (JFF)’s Advancing AI-Resilient Early-Career Pathways Initiative aims to identify, learn from, and understand pathways to scale for innovative, worker-centered models that support early-career workers in an AI-transformed labor market and help ensure AI leads to quality jobs for all, especially those who face multiple barriers to economic advancement, like limited access to work-based learning, professional networks, and early-career job opportunities.

The initiative focuses on three areas:  

  • Work-based learning 
  • Durable skills 
  • Employer engagement 

These intervention areas were identified as promising opportunities for deeper exploration through cross-sector convenings held in late 2025 and early 2026. The convenings brought together over 100 national leaders across education, workforce, technology, industry, and philanthropy organizations. They highlighted the voices of early-career workers to explore how the work and learning ecosystem can respond to the implications of AI for them.

FourOne Insights 

Employer Incentives and Business Value

FourOne Insights will leverage its new employer-facing Entry-Level Hiring Optimization Tool to deliver a report on how quantifying the business value of entry-level hiring in AI-integrated occupations impacts employer hiring behavior. They will partner and learn from regional and national employers, combining labor market data, task-level AI analysis, and ROI modeling to understand how access to data-backed insights supports maintaining and strengthening early-career pathways.

Pursuit

Reimagining Work-Based Learning

Pursuit is partnering with the Hispanic Federation to embed AI-trained, early-career workers inside small and medium-sized businesses as paid AI consultants. The approach  begins with an AI fluency workshop to help business owners identify operational pain points, then matches each business with a Pursuit-trained engineer to build a custom AI-enabled solution. The model creates paid, on-the-job experience for emerging AI talent while helping under-resourced businesses adopt AI in practical, meaningful ways, building the human infrastructure for an AI-augmentation economy from the ground up.

Reimagining Work-Based Learning

The Southeast Service Cooperative will build upon its early college program, The Biomedical Equipment Technology Academy (BETA), by conducting employer-led AI role analyses, defining validated AI-resilient technical and durable skill competencies, and aligning coursework and immersion experiences to develop those competencies intentionally.

Articulation and Assessment of Durable Skills

Cybersecurity can be a high-wage on-ramp for early career workers, but only if learners can prove they’re ready for the job. When everyone has AI, the durable skill is knowing when and how to use it well. Wayground is learning from and evaluating  an AI-fluency assessment layer that captures how learners combine AI, technical judgment, and domain knowledge on real-world tasks, and then translates that into a readiness signal that both employers and learners understand. Wayground (formerly Quizizz) reaches 80% of U.S. schools and, through Wayground for Business, serves corporate learning and workforce development clients, operating on both sides of the education-to-employment bridge.

These innovative approaches will generate practical, scalable learning for the field, and inform future scalable models, cohorts, partnerships, and investment in early-career AI pathways.
