Advanced manufacturing is an important sector for the Pathways to Prosperity Network, and, in many states, there are similar concerns around sustaining a talent pipeline and keeping manufacturing viable through innovations in the production process. Outside of these shared issues, states also have unique workforce needs and varied approaches to supporting the industry. In this report, Sheila Jackson provides a case study of advanced manufacturing in Massachusetts that illustrates how the industry functioned as a crucial element of former Governor Deval Patrick’s statewide economic development strategy. In aligning advanced manufacturing with new initiatives to promote “innovation and infrastructure” and with existing career and technical education programs within high schools and community colleges, Massachusetts developed a state-level response to regional manufacturing challenges.
