They need to know they are not alone and that there are resources available to help them keep going under adverse circumstances.

Nudging Works in CCs Among STEM Students

In a project undertaken by JFF and ed tech company Persistence Plus, text nudges increased first-to-second-year persistence for STEM students by 10 percentage points and exposed particular success among students of color and those over the age of 25. The multi-year research involved about 9,500 students at four community colleges.
