The education and career pathways of the future will be marked by a thorough, ongoing—and, one hopes, effective, equitable, and ethical—application of data to student and worker outcomes with a degree of refinement never before thought possible.

In a recent featured editorial in Diplomatic Courier's After the Pandemic: Reimagining the Future of Education and Work ebook, JFF CEO Maria Flynn argues that it will soon be possible to harness data to develop not just personalized education and career pathways for individuals but precision pathways.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that the education and career pathways of the future will be marked by a thorough, ongoing—and, one hopes, effective, equitable, and ethical—application of data to student and worker outcomes with a degree of refinement never before thought possible,” Flynn declares in the opening of her August 15 column, titled “Moving Toward Precision Learning in Postsecondary and Workforce Education.”

Acknowledging that there is nothing new about the idea of applying data to the management of work and education, Flynn says advances in IT tools like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and big data will “enable the transition from personalization to precision in an array of sectors, including—transformationally—education and career pathways.”
