Before joining JFF, Carey was senior vice president and chief legal officer at Flowserve Corporation, a Fortune 500 company based in Texas with 24,000 employees in 55 countries.  She was a fellow at the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative and was co-founder of a collaborative workforce leadership council in North Texas coordinating workforce development efforts with employers across the region.

In her personal life, Carey says she “started playing video games about five years ago as a way to connect with my sons. Fast forward, both boys are out of the house but I still occasionally play on my own.” She was also a congressional page in 1988 for then-Speaker Jim Wright. She also “loves to garden, (just pulling weeds really).”
