Strengthen the Safety Net of Low-Income Workers

Richard Kazis, November 2001

When terrorists attacked the United States on September 11, 2001, they pushed the nation's already-weakening economy into recession and yanked the economic supports out from under America's poorest workers. The economy will recover, yet the economic news mandates strong action on two fronts: first, to immediately assist those who lost their jobs, and, second, to enable low-income individuals to advance into family-supporting careers while meeting the economy's demand for knowledgeable and skilled workers. Investing to protect our nation's greatest asset—its people—is the message of Strengthen the Safety Net of Low-Income Workers, an op-ed in the Miami Herald by JFF senior vice president Richard Kazis.
