During Accelerate TEXAS Week, all Accelerate TEXAS colleges and districts and other statewide partners staged and coordinated activities to raise Texans’ awareness of the need for Adult Basic Education-to-postsecondary pathways.
This weeklong celebration brings together adult students, their families, college faculty and administrators, local employers, community leaders, and legislators to honor the work and early successes of this initiative. Jobs for the Future supports both grantees and statewide partners as they develop, execute, and publicize local and regional events, and also promotes the Week among national education trade outlets that cover adult and higher education.

- The involvement of the college and district grantees, as well as the statewide partners (THECB, JFF, and Texas State University).
- Build public support for the expansion of this work.

How to Participate in Accelerate TEXAS Week
Please feel free to customize these ideas or develop your own!
- Issue a news release about your participation in Accelerate TEXAS, your own college’s or district’s achievements to date, and your goals for the remainder of the initiative and beyond.
Include quotes from participants, faculty, and administrators—and have them agree to media requests for interviews.
- Invite media—and all other community stakeholders—to a college or district event (an open house, presentation, award for someone involved in the initiative).
Also invite students, their families, faculty, college administrators, other local ABE providers, and key local employers—and consider involving some as speakers/presenters.
- Submit an op-ed to your local newspaper touting your Accelerate TEXAS work, goals, and achievements. Have it authored by one of the following:
- A student (to maximize the human interest factor)
- A faculty member or local leader of your grant
- A highly regarded local employer who will benefit from having more skilled workers to choose from as result of this initiative
- Arrange a local radio or TV interview for a student, faculty member, or college administrator (along with a key employer) to talk about the importance of Accelerate TEXAS.
- Arrange for a local official to proclaim Accelerate TEXAS Week in honor of your college’s or district’s participation and results.
The following ideas are designed to engage a wider audience. Accordingly, these activities require a bit more planning time and organizing capacity than the college-based events.
- Panel Discussions/Presentations: Colleges can expand local awareness of adult learner-related issues by inviting educators, scholars, advocates, and policymakers to discuss topics that affect local college and student achievement.
- Campus Receptions/Tours: Offer community members opportunities to meet students and faculty at a reception. The reception can include a photo exhibit (or other type of display) featuring a day in the life of an Accelerate TEXAS participant. Colleges could even honor a student, teacher, parent, or local leader at the reception.
Participate via Social Media
- Post on Facebook what your college/district is doing to celebrate!
- Write a blog for your website (we will repost on our blogs too!) that features a student and tells his/her success story, or about how your programs work.
- Post Accelerate TEXAS event photos around your college(s), on your websites, Facebook pages, and on Twitter (mention us so we can share more widely!)
- Tweet updates about your events, your Accelerate TEXAS work and results, personal stories, etc. using the hashtag #AccelerateTX
- Follow @TXHigherEdBoard, and @TXst; and help spread our tweets related to the week as well.
Tips for Before and After the Week
- Suggest follow-up actions for interested local stakeholders, such as (Contact THECB—info below—for specific ideas on public policies that support and promote this work.)
- Encourage local/state representatives to support funding for Accelerate TEXAS
- Encourage key employers to partner with you to provide greater opportunity for your students).
- Report to your college(s) on your activities both before and after they occur.
- Post photos from your events or class visits on your website or social pages.
- Send thank you letters to all who helped and supported you throughout the Week, and/or at any point throughout this initiative.
