Double the Numbers Conference: Opening Plenary
Jobs for the Future

(2003)

Summary:
In October 2003, Jobs for the Future brought together leaders from schools, districts, postsecondary institutions, businesses, states, and national organizations concerned with K-16 education improvement to promote policies that can dramatically improve postsecondary outcomes for underrepresented students—doubling the numbers who attain a postsecondary credential. The premise of the conference was that while higher standards for high school exit are critical to any effort to improve secondary and postsecondary outcomes, they are unlikely to be sufficient. To improve high school and postsecondary outcomes significantly, states will have to pursue additional strategies, including those that formally integrate secondary and postsecondary learning. Double the Numbers highlighted current programs facilitating strong high school to postsecondary transitions; explored the potential for existing policies that open doors to greater educational attainment; and identified needed changes in state governance, finance, and local capacity.
