In
October 2003, Jobs for the Future prepared a volume of conference
papers for the Double the Numbers conference to promote policies that
can dramatically improve postsecondary outcomes for underrepresented
students—doubling the numbers who attain a postsecondary credential. In
2004, Harvard Education Publishing Group will publish a book growing
out of the conference. This collection of essays will be about
strategies to strengthen our nation’s public educational pipeline,
particularly our high schools and the postsecondary institutions whose
credentials are the key to economic success. It will be about policies
and practices that can reduce the unacceptably high costs of our
nation’s failure to prepare large numbers of young people for further
education, productive careers, and active citizenship.
