Associate Vice President, Building Economic Opportunity Group

JFF seeks candidates for Associate Vice President of the Building Economic Opportunity Group. The AVP reports to senior management and will play a lead role in working with federal and state policymakers on workforce and community college policy issues. The AVP will have significant experience in policy development and practice, particularly at the state level. The AVP must have experience in community college and workforce development policy.

Required skills, competencies, and experiences include:

  • Focus and expertise in community college and workforce development policy, particularly at the state level

  • Experience in putting policy into place, including building coalitions, and working with legislators, executive leaders, and administrators

  • Experienced researcher with an emphasis on action research that supports policy development and implementation

  • Ability to identify, analyze, distill, and frame key state and federal policy issues

  • Excellent communicator with outstanding writing and speaking skills

  • A critical and independent thinker who thinks issues through fully and expresses ideas clearly and directly and is comfortable creating new and innovative ideas and approaches

  • An empowered self-starter who makes things happen and who takes personal responsibility

  • A proven leader with superior project management and networking skills with strong ability to manage up and laterally, to work in teams, and to share responsibility and credit

  • A respectful, collegial, team and relationship builder who is an effective listener and possesses an open, candid, honest demeanor

The AVP must be passionate about: the importance of policy as a lever for change, the power of good ideas, the need to help low-income individuals prepare better for lifelong learning and to acquire skills that pay off.

Required management and administrative skills include:
 
  • Accountability for management (i.e., staff, budget, deliverables) and independently raising funds associated with major program strategy or core strategies

  • Ability to act on behalf of the cluster or department vice president

  • Ability to handle complex and sensitive assignments

  • Ability to garner national support through their own networks

  • Produce publishable work in appropriate media as lead author

  • Broaden national awareness of the mission

  • Serve on senior leadership teams in the organization

  • Ability to act as a mentor to project managers, senior project managers, program directors, and administrative staff.

  • Minimum of 12 years experience in related fields

  • Expert or comprehensive content knowledge and understanding of JFF approaches

  • Ability to conceptualize, plan, and manage multiple major complex projects while simultaneously moving forward

  • Demonstrated ability to build, develop, and lead partnerships

  • Ability to provide technical assistance to field in development of policy/practices

  • Demonstrated leadership in relevant professional circles

  • Extensive human resource and financial management experience

  • Extensive, proven fundraising experience
